Kleifarvatn

📍 Reykjanes Peninsula

📖 Description

Kleifarvatn is Iceland's largest lake on the Reykjanes peninsula a mysterious deep lake with no visible rivers flowing in or out. The water filters through a geothermal vent system in the lake bed, and the level fell by two metres after a 2000 earthquake. The black lava landscape, sulphurous shoreline vents, and dark brooding colour create an atmosphere unlike anywhere else in Iceland just 30 km from Reykjavik.
