Borgarvirki

📍 North Iceland

📖 Description

Borgarvirki is a natural basalt fortress a dramatic circular plateau of columnar lava rising from flat farmland, used as a fortification in the Saga Age. A short climb leads to the summit, where defenders once rolled boulders down the vertical rock walls. The sweeping view across Víðidalur valley, river and distant mountains is magnificent, and the site is almost always deserted.
