Stuðlagil Canyon
📍 East Iceland
📖 Description
Stuðlagil is Iceland's most spectacular basalt column canyon, only revealed to the world in 2016 when a dam upstream lowered the river enough to expose the extraordinary rock formations beneath. The canyon walls are packed with perfectly vertical hexagonal columns rising 30 metres from a vivid turquoise glacial river. Now considered one of Iceland's finest natural gems, it still sees only a fraction of the visitors that better-known sites attract.
