Ásbyrgi Canyon

📍 North Iceland

📖 Description

Ásbyrgi is a horseshoe-shaped canyon 3.5 km long, enclosed on three sides by sheer 100-metre basalt walls. Norse mythology holds that it was formed by the hoof of Odin's eight-legged horse Sleipnir. Geologists believe a catastrophic glacial flood carved it. The canyon floor is filled with birch woodland and a small lake a sheltered oasis of green in the stark highland landscape.
