Grjótagjá Cave

📍 North Iceland

📖 Description

Grjótagjá is a small lava cave containing a brilliantly blue geothermal pool, accessible through a narrow crack in the earth. It gained worldwide recognition as a filming location in Game of Thrones. Locals once swam here until a 1970s eruption raised the temperature too high. The cave interior glows an ethereal blue from sunlight penetrating through cracks in the lava ceiling.
